9 Tips to Maximize Your Networking

by BNI India

When it comes to networking, it can be hard to know which methods to adopt to ensure that you are networking successfully. The truth is that networking is often more about quality than it is about quantity. Often, people may think they are networking successfully, but if that networking isn’t producing results, it may be time to rethink the strategy.

Here are 9 tips to help you ensure the quality of your networking.

It’s not a campaign

Entering a networking event like you’re going into battle – armed with your business cards & spiel and ‘attacking’ each person you meet in hopes of a victory – actually benefits you very little. Though it is good to be prepared with business cards and a quick rundown of what you do, it doesn’t do to be so obviously after quantity in contacts. If someone feels like they are just next up in your line of fire, it will reap you very few results.

Be engaging

Carrying on from the last point, don’t walk into a networking event with the intent of ‘working the room’. People don’t like to feel like you are only approaching them to make a quick contact and move on. Taking time to engage is a priority at networking events, as only through a genuine connection will people remember you and recommend you.

Take your time

Remember that when it comes to networking, one good connection is worth more than 10 that won’t work out. Keep this in mind when in conversation with someone. Ask questions and listen carefully to the answers. Checking your watch or looking impatient won’t score you any points. Be fully focused on the person you’re speaking to.

Exchange stories

People make connections with people. Though you are a professional and networking as such, don’t forget that the human side is what forges a connection. Talking about your experiences, the story behind your business and why you do what you do – and taking the time to listen to their story – is what relationships are built on.

Respond to their needs

If someone mentions they have a problem and it is within your power to help them out, always do so immediately. This is the best way to be memorable, encourage trust and start building a strong connection.

Set yourself up

If a conversation is going well and it looks like you are building a connection with someone, ask questions that will help you easily carry on the connection next time you meet them. Asking about their projects or what they are working on or aiming for can give you an opening for the next time you talk – and they will appreciate that you remembered.

Be useful

Always help others out when you can. The more you do this, the more people see you as someone who is looking out for them, which fosters trust and makes it more likely that they will want to recommend you to others.

Be active on social media

Social media is a great way to stay in touch with people that is not too intrusive. Social media is great way to maintain contacts and budding business relationships. Just make sure it doesn’t take the place of face-to-face meetings.

Networking mottos

It can be hard to remember everything you want to remember while networking, especially if you are already anxious or nervous about it. So keep in mind these three guiding principles of networking:

Selectivity

Discretion, and

Mindfulness

Keeping these three buzzwords in your mind will help keep you on track and ensure that your networking becomes much more successful.
