Every single individual these days is undergoing a period of stress just thinking about the multitude of tasks that they have to perform!
We are in such a fast-paced era that people will only smirk at you if you are not multitasking. We are so used to having so many tasks at hand that now we cannot even think of going back to the era where everything was done one at a time.
Chunking can come in very handy when you have to manage a plethora of tasks.
What is Chunking and how does it help?
Chunking is putting information into ideally sized groups so that they can be used effectively. As you know, in each domain, modularization is the key to achieving a greater number of things in a short span of time. Therefore, to best utilize chunking, you could always keep similar kind of information in the same group.
Having a modular way of doing things will not only reduce your stress levels but help you accomplish more during the day than you usually can.
Here are some steps to go about the act of chunking:
Document everything that seems even mildly important
Many times, we have it in our mind, to complete a lot of tasks, achieve a lot of things but we miserably fail because we have no documentation to keep track of it. Document everything that is essential – your ideas, the meetings, follow up meetings, what are the results that you are looking at etc. That way, when there’s a deviation from the path, at least you are aware as to where it is deviating from.
Documenting is a very powerful tool which can bring about a significant amount of change in your routine lives. Capturing the tasks that you want to accomplish will keep you focused and will help you maintain a record.
Create broader categories for common tasks
Once you have documented everything that you want to do, create common categories to put the tasks under. For example, if there is a small glitch in your work that is holding you back, you could put it under the broader category names ‘Work Related’ or something along those lines.
Similarly, if you haven’t visited a friend in long or need to resolve some issue in a relationship, you could put it in the broader category of relationships. Creating broader categories will help you focus your tasks and assign separate time frames for them. This will make the overall process of solving the problems in a category much easier.
Working on the solutions is the major outcome of chunking
Just creating categories and documenting your problems in them is not enough. Working on the solutions is the most important part of it. So once you have created chunks of information, just look through them and see what can be done and when can it be done.
Once you are clear on what and how things can be resolved, you will automatically lead a stress-free and focused life.
