For anyone new to networking, the prospect can seem daunting. Many might not know where to start: how to approach someone or even begin a conversation, or how to begin building a connection.
If you find the idea of networking for the first time a challenging one, here are some tips that will help you to be more confident, and more importantly, prepared.
Identify your goal
Ask yourself what you want to accomplish during the event – what are your business needs? Are you looking to meet new clients, or make new referral partners? Are you hoping to simply learn from the professionals and learn about the local businesses? Or are you there for the purpose of making yourself visible and known to other professionals?
Take time to research
Do some research on what will be happening at the event, and who will be in attendance. Read up on the topics that the speakers will be addressing, and decide which topics you are interested in discussing with them or others you meet at the event. If there is a particular person you want to meet, connect with them over LinkedIn before the event, giving them time to see that you are interested in building a connection with them – this will make it easier to introduce yourself in person later on.
Be prepared with a pitch
To avoid possible nervousness at being asked to explain what you do to a new connection, be prepared with a short pitch. The pitch should be brief and should include a little about who you are, your expertise and experience, and any other information you think might be useful to them. Remember to:
- Talk about what you do and give your reasons for it
- Share what you feel makes you different from others in the industry
- Give examples or explain your job with real stories that will engage your conversation partner
Look sharp
First impressions do matter, so make sure you show up to the networking event smartly dressed. A clean, professional look will encourage others’ interest & trust in you.
