How to Maximize Priorities Using the “Rule of Three”

by BNI India

In this millennial era, it is very important for us to prioritize our tasks. Prioritization will help us reduce stress in our day to day life and plan our day better. It is also important to assign priority to every task so that we can maintain a good work-life balance.

Here is the “Rule of Three” that will help you maximize your priorities:

Create your priority list

The first and the foremost step is to create a priority list. Here are some points that you can keep in mind while creating your priority list:

  • If you have two tasks that are at the same level i.e. have to be done with the same urgency and importance, assign higher priority to the one that requires lesser effort.
  • Make sure for tasks that don’t have a defined time, you put aside some extra time for them while putting them in the priority list.
  • Make a priority list for work related tasks and not work-related tasks because if you have an orderly list for your household tasks also, it will help you save time.
  • Last but not the least, make sure your priority list is very realistic. With your priority list, put the time limit with each and every task which will make your priority list complete.

Don’t waste any time

Once your priority list is made, make sure you stick to the timing of each and other task. For every task with a higher priority, you should stick to a specified timing for each task.

In day, we have 24 hours and we have multiple tasks to complete over the entire day. We should make sure that we do not waste any time in any of the tasks. You can always keep some leisure time for you to relax and rejuvenate in the day but the work tasks or household tasks that are important shouldn’t be delayed. Any delay in one task will lead to delays in the subsequent tasks that are coming up.

Go out there and take action!

Once you have made your priority list and added the timing factor to each of them, make sure to go out there and implement them. The most important action items should be executed as soon as possible.

Often times, we end up making lists and never execute them. That’s when our priorities    get mixed and we end up missing out on achieving the work-life balance that we are always trying to achieve in this era. We sometimes miss out on attending important events at home and lag behind at office because we are unable to implement our priority list effectively.

“Rule of Three” when followed gives effective results in maximizing your priorities and helps you ease into a satisfied day-to-day schedule.
