Ambition, passion, drive, confidence, hard-work are some of the common characteristics one would associate with an entrepreneur. But, there is one attribute which is less spoken of, the value of which has always been taken for granted-Empathy.
Empathy is a complicated trait, almost an illusion. We think we have it but when the time comes we give in-we give in to fear, greed, something easy but questionable, desires etc. We are but human, but empathy is about being human with something deeply ingrained, like a value which is of value to the world.
As entrepreneurs, you need to step into others’ shoes many times in your life or in a day perhaps. Be it professionally or personally, it is important for you to understand human beings-be it customers, employees, colleagues, family, mentors etc in order to understand your business & the impact it has on your company & family.
Understand before you ask to be understood. ‘How can I help you’ is always the better first step than, ‘This is how I can help you’. Your consumers will be ensured in your interest in their problems or queries.
In order to exercise the virtue of empathy, you must be backed by solid data, else your empathy will only stop at being a mere feeling rather than a motivator to bring about change.Always be knowledgeable and open to gathering data from authentic sources, surveys, data centres etc; so that you know the pulse of the market, existing customers and potential customers.
Know them before you help them.
Assumptions and hypothetical situations are inevitable in the world of humankind. All great and not so great inventions have been tried and tested before they became what they are today. An entrepreneur will need to base many decisions on assumptions before they pass a litmus test.
Empathy also fosters courage to test assumptions. The assumptions that the product/service will be of value to the market and that the customers/market will find/ buy your product will help initiate a business and scale it eventually.
You have empathy, you want to bring about change, you take risks, work hard, dare to try and you finally taste success-It is a cycle worth being a part of, especially if you genuinely want the world to live the change you are pursuing to bring about.
