Humour In The Workplace Can Be A Big Morale Booster

by BNI India

Humour in the workplace is often frowned upon, but slowly and surely this attitude is changing. The work environment is evolving into a space of free expression, and humour is a big hit. Here’s why humour in the workplace is fast becoming essential:

    1. Improves Rapport: Relationships within the organisation are important to build and sustain, for smooth & efficient functioning. And humour does this well. Funny office banter between employees and employer can loosen up knots and create a space of trust & confidence.
    2. Makes routine interesting: Meetings, presentations & speeches are day-to-day affairs which can easily introduce monotony in the workplace, humour can break this boredom. In fact, humour is memorable, so if you want to emphasise on a certain point, humour will help people remember.
    3. Serves as a great ice breaker: When serious topics are being discussed, humour helps to break the tension and help people lighten up. This keeps the team optimistic and builds confidence to a great extent. In fact, they’ll not feel as if they’re being burdened with something and will face the situation, whatever it may be, with an open mind.
    4. Creates a happier, more positive work environment: The happier your employees the more they’re motivated. And what could be a better perk than laughter? Laughter creates a more positive environment which is just what is needed in places where deadlines, budget, productivity and other high-impacting words are often used.

If you feel you don’t have the funny bone in you, simply start by being a little more relaxed and loose in the office, almost childlike. When your employees observe that you’re open to being a bit free and easy-going, they loosen up too, and soon you’ll have your employees getting chummy with each other; which improves team-building efforts. Lighten up and you’ll see results.
