A good leader not only knows her/his subordinates but also senses them.
- Get to know their strengths & weaknesses.
- Once you know the hidden potential you can figure out ways to make those dormant skills more active.
- A great coach will devise ideas and exercises that will stimulate the person to use his skills & knowledge to his best potential.
- Connecting the dots is what good leaders are able to do. Ensure your employee’s skills are being used well in order to fulfill the job requirement.
- Be insightful about the way a particular employee works or thinks and give one space to explore one’s potential in their own way. By doing so, they will trust you more and intimate you with their problems or learnings and you’ll get to know them better than before.
- Encourage them to embrace the unknown and to continue adding to their skill set.
- Make sure they have time to disengage from work too, either in the form of team outings, games or talent shows. It will reduce friction among team members.
- Try and have one-to-one conversations/ interactions with team members whenever possible; it will help boost morale and you will always be in the know with regard to their professional and sometimes personal problems.
- Be a leader when you need to be a leader, but be a friend when you need to be a friend. That is the only way employees will trust leaders and give their best at work!
